   Proposal Description:
   The overall aim of the proposed project is to examine the prevalence and incidence of dementia in the oldest old as part of our ongoing, NIH funded, Long Life Family Study (LLFS).  In the first part of the study, we propose to develop algorithms for dementia in the LLFS cohort based on performance on the cognitive test battery and on functional status during the in person assessment visit.  We will use cognitive and functional data for demented and non-demented participants from the National Alzheimer???s Coordinating Center (NACC) database as the standard of comparison against which to establish and validate our diagnostic algorithms. We will then compare the prevalence of dementia based on our algorithms with the prevalence of dementia based on diagnoses in the participants??? Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) record to determine if dementia is under-diagnosed in an elderly community dwelling population.  In the second part of the study, we will develop additional algorithms for dementia based on the Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status (TICS) and Dementia Questionnaire (DQ) to classify participants with incident dementia.  We will validate these criteria using an in person assessment as the standard of comparison.
